catalog THIS!

My schedule this semester consists of Medical Informatics (yaay!!) and Organizing Information. This comes as a 'relief' of sorts because--as you now know--I have been petrified of my inexperience in basic functions of librarianship: one of which is cataloging. Though it comes in my final stretch of graduate school, I heaved a sigh of relief that I will at least be exposed to fundamentals of cataloging and classification before completing the program. I was even discussing a "DIY crash course" with my advisor.

It may have been unreasonable to think that I would receive a degree in library science from an accredited institution--one with notable accolades in the field, to boot--without having had instruction in basic cataloging principles. But until now, it never came up. For whatever reason, it was decided that me and all my classmates in the VI would take Organizing Information together this semester. I'm sure there was a "good" reason for doing this, but in my estimation, I should have taken this core course much earlier in my program career. One of my cohort-mates who just joined the program in the 2nd incoming class even asked me what sense it made for me to be taking such a fundamental course at the same time she did. I kindly pointed her in the direction of the 'powers that be'.
In actuality, I have already taken a course which named Organizing Information as a prerequisite. Was it sheer coincidence that it gave me the most difficulty thus far? Exactly. Why did I go ahead and take it, knowing my situation? In the light that hindsight is 20-20, my trust rested in advisement that "I would be fine". That is not to say that an educated adult such as myself should not be held accountable for my own decisions but, I expect that degree programs should be structured and administered in a logical format.

And that's all I have to say about that.
